Kira and Lyra Moss arrived at BOND as one of the most quietly anticipated duos of the season. Twin sisters who had competed together on the track at Oregon State, they came with a shared athletic vocabulary — an intuitive understanding of each other's timing and capacity that most of the other teams would have to build from scratch. On paper, they were well-suited for a competition built around partnership. In practice, the arena found the one crack in their foundation on the very first night.
The Members
The older of the two by four minutes, a fact she brought up unprompted in her pre-show interview. Kira was the more vocal twin — quicker to speak in the briefing room, quicker to set strategy. She ran the 400m relay anchor leg at Oregon State and carried a natural instinct for pacing. In the Dead Weight challenge she handled the first and third exchanges cleanly, setting a good rhythm. Her grip never failed. The breakdown belonged to her sister, and in the send-off she made a point of not assigning blame — which said something about her.
The quieter twin, though not by much. Lyra ran the third leg of the relay — the setup leg, the one that doesn't get remembered. She was the stronger of the two in pure strength training leading up to the show but had not accounted for grip fatigue under load across a timed course. The two bag drops in the final 100 meters came on the second-to-last exchange — her hands gave out before the window opened, and she lost control of the bag twice in quick succession. She knew immediately what it meant. The camera caught her face as the time was posted. She didn't look surprised.
On the Show
Doubledown competed in one episode. The Dead Weight challenge placed all eight duos on the same rubberized track loop, staggered by lane but running simultaneously. For the first six exchange points, Kira and Lyra moved efficiently and stayed in the middle of the pack — no wasted motion, no miscommunications. Their relay background showed. They were passing weight with the kind of timing that looks rehearsed because it was.
The collapse came at exchange point seven of eight, with roughly 100 meters remaining. Lyra was carrying the heavier of the two bags — a 54-pound sandbag — and her grip gave out before the next window opened. Under the rules, she could not set the bag down. She held it for a further 12 seconds, waiting for the light, and by the time the window opened her hands had cramped badly enough that the transfer to Kira was already unstable. The bag hit the floor. She picked it up, passed it, and then the same thing happened again four seconds later.
Two drops, 90 seconds of penalty time. Without the penalties, Doubledown would have finished 6th. The penalties placed them last by 48 seconds over Redline in 7th.
In the send-off, Lyra spoke first. She said the show was harder than she expected, not in the way she expected. Kira put her arm around her and didn't say much. They left the arena together, still in their matching olive kit, and the camera held on them until the doors closed.
Legacy
Doubledown holds the distinction of being the first duo ever eliminated from BOND. They were also the only team in Season 1 to be eliminated on a penalty result rather than a raw performance deficit — a detail noted in multiple post-season retrospectives on the show. Their exit sparked an early-season debate among viewers about whether the bag-drop penalty was appropriately calibrated, a conversation that carried through the rest of the season and reportedly influenced rule modifications considered for Season 2.
Kira and Lyra Moss were invited back for a potential all-stars format that was discussed internally at ABC in 2006 but never moved into production.
